Lessons in Longevity and a Path to Sainthood
The Catholic Business Network of Baltimore is pleased to welcome Sr. Marcia Hall, Superior General of the Oblate Sisters of Providence, to speak at our upcoming meeting on October 24th. Please join us to hear her perspectives on the Oblate Sisters of Providence, the nation’s oldest Black Catholic order, and their efforts to attract new women into their 196 year tradition of service. She will also update us on the fascinating journey to Sainthood for the founder of the order, Mother Mary Lange, and how you can join in the effort. In 2023, Pope Francis formally decreed that Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange, who died in Baltimore in 1882, lived a life of heroic virtues.
Marcia was raised in a devout Catholic home in Trenton, New Jersey, and attended Catholic schools, including Our Lady of the Divine Shepherd in Trenton, where she was taught by the Oblate Sisters. Though she felt a call to religious life, she initially pursued a path that lead to Bryn Mawr College and forward to receive a doctorate in sociology from the University of Michigan. After a time of discernment with the Oblates, she entered the community on her 42nd birthday in 1998, professing first vows in 2001 and final vows in 2006. Among other opportunities, she has served as principal of the order’s flagship school, St. Francis Academy in Baltimore.
Currently the order has approximately eighty members, serving in Baltimore, Maryland, Miami, Florida, Buffalo, New York, and Costa Rica. Please register today to learn and grow with the mission of the Oblate Sisters of Providence.
